Daystar, Makunga, and Homeboyz shine on day 1 of Betika Bingwa Fest grand final

Daystar Falcons, Makunga Urban, and Homeboyz enjoyed a perfect start at the Betika Bingwa Fest Grand Final held at Kisumu Polytechnic, maintaining a 100% win record on day one.

Representing the Eastern Region, Daystar kicked off their campaign with a dominant 15-0 victory over P61 from Rift Valley.

They wrapped up the day in style, securing a 24-7 win against Coastal representatives TUM Marines—boosting their chances of reaching the knockout phase as the top seeds ahead of their final group stage match.

Western Region champions Makunga Urban were also impressive, edging TUM Marines 10-7 before sealing their day with a hard-fought 12-7 win over P61.

Homeboyz opened their day with a commanding 22-5 win against Shajanand and capped it off with a 12-7 triumph over Mombasa RFC, confirming their strong form heading into day two.

In the women’s category, Western Spears enjoyed a flying start with two consecutive wins, boosting their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.

Launched in 2024, the Betika Bingwa Fest 10s brings together regional champions and runners-up for a shot at national glory. Along with the prestige, the teams are competing for lucrative prize money—regional champions previously pocketed Ksh 1,000,000.

In this Grand Finale, the winning team will walk away with Ksh 2.5 million. Individual accolades are also up for grabs, with the Most Valuable Player, Top Try Scorer, and Top Points Scorer each set to receive Ksh 50,000.

The tournament continues on Saturday with the final pool matches, and all eyes will be on Sunday’s thrilling conclusion.
