WORLD SEVENS SERIES

10th place for Kenya 7s in Hong Kong after conceding last minute try against South Africa

Kenya 7s fell short in a tight encounter against South Africa, losing 19-17 to finish 10th at the Hong Kong Sevens held at Kai Tak Stadium.

Shujaa had enjoyed recent dominance over South Africa, having beaten them in the 2023 Africa Men’s 7s to qualify for the 2024 Olympics and securing another victory in Dubai (22-17).

However, South Africa came into this match determined to finish strong after missing out on the Cup quarterfinals.

Kenya 7s concede twice

Shilton van Wyk gave South Africa an early lead with a try in the opening minute. Their advantage doubled when youngster Gino Cupido broke away down the right wing to score, extending the lead to 12-0.

Kenya responded patiently, with Samuel Asati setting up Nygel Amaitsa for a converted try to cut the deficit to 12-7.

Moments later, Amaitsa executed a well-placed grabber kick, chased it down, and scored to tie the game at 12-12 before halftime. South Africa were reduced to six men just before the break after receiving a yellow card.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Shujaa took the lead in the second half when Patrick Odongo capitalized on a Jone Kubu pass to sprint over for a 17-12 advantage. However, South Africa fought back, with Siviwe Soyizwapi scoring a crucial try which was awarded after TMO review and converted by Dewald Human, to edge ahead 19-17.

Kenya had one last chance with 30 seconds remaining, but a handling error denied them possession, allowing South Africa to clear their lines and secure the win.

Shujaa now shift focus to their next tournament set for Singapore.
