Kenya 7s advanced to the Hong Kong 7s ninth-place playoff after a 17-10 victory over the USA in the semi-final on Saturday.
Shujaa will return to action on Sunday, where they will face the winner of the South Africa vs. Uruguay match at 7:00 a.m.
Kenya 7s opponents
The USA’s fate was already sealed, as they are set to compete in the relegation playoffs at their home tournament, the LA 7s, following a difficult season. They faced a determined Shujaa side that narrowly missed out on the Cup quarter-finals despite an improved group stage performance.
Shujaa started strongly, quickly shifting the ball to the left to find Kevin Wekesa, who fended off his marker and raced clear to score the opening try. The successful conversion put Kenya 7s ahead 7-0.
The red shirts had opportunities to extend their lead, but George Ooro knocked on in the try box while attempting to ground the ball. Another chance went begging when speedster Patrick Odongo broke away but lost the ball forward.

Just before halftime, the USA responded as Ben Broselle found space on the left and evaded Vincent Onyala to score. A missed conversion saw Kenya take a slim 7-5 lead into the break.
In the second half, Onyala reacted quickly to a penalty deep in the USA’s territory, tapping and diving over to extend Shujaa’s lead to 12-5 after another missed conversion. Kenya 7s widened the gap further when Odongo sprinted down the left wing to score in the corner, making it 17-5.
Broselle grabbed a late consolation try for the USA at the stroke of full-time, but it wasn’t enough to deny Kenya their spot in the ninth-place playoff.
