Kenya 7s started their Hong Kong 7s campaign with an emphatic 19-0 victory over Spain in their Pool C opener at Kai Stadium on Friday morning.

The win saw Shujaa top the pool early on, thanks to a superior point differential, while also ending their six-match losing streak in the World Rugby Sevens Series. Additionally, Kenya snapped a three-match losing streak against Spain.

Kenya 7s form

Heading into the match, the two teams had been on different trajectories. Spain had enjoyed a strong start to the season, sitting second on the World Sevens Series log.

In contrast, Shujaa had struggled in 2025, winning just two of their 10 matches, and were desperate to turn their form around.

Spain applied early pressure, but Kenya struck first. Patrick Odongo pounced on a loose ball deep in Kenya’s half and sprinted the length of the field to score the opening try.

Kenya extended their lead when Jone Kubu delivered a well-timed pass to skipper George Ooro, who stepped inside his marker and powered through for a try under the posts.

Spain struggled with discipline, conceding five penalties in the first half, but Kenya failed to capitalize on a penalty opportunity that could have added a third try before the break.

In the second half, Nygel Amaitsa came close to scoring but knocked the ball forward at a crucial moment. However, Kenya quickly regained possession, winning a scrum deep in Spain’s territory.

From the resulting play, co-captain Samuel Asati sniped from the base of the scrum and dived over to seal Kenya’s dominant 19-0 victory.

With a strong start to their Hong Kong 7s campaign, Kenya will now focus on securing a place in the quarterfinals. Their next challenge comes against Great Britain at 9:23 AM.
