KCB Rugby had to wait till the last breath of the game to confirm a 29-27 win over Menengai Oilers in a tightly contested encounter at the Ruaraka Sports club.

Oilers would lead the home team in the first half despite KCB scoring twice as Timothy Omela made sure Oilers stayed on tip of proceedings from the boot.

KCB Rugby win late

Both teams would score twice in the second period but a conversion at the death would give KCB the win to keep them within the semi final spots.

Oilers were quick to draw first blood, Timothy Omela drilling in a penalty to make it 3-0 for the Nakuru based side in their blue and pink livery.

KCB replied almost immediately, Elvis Olukusi gliding past a nonchalant Oilers defence to burge over the whitewash. Austin Sikutwa missed his attempt at converting the try for a 5-3 lead.

Oilers would pull back into the lead from penalty, Omela splitting the uprights from fourty meters out to retake the lead.

Oilers who had adopted a rather cautiously approach would drill in a further three penalties from the boot of Omela for a 15-5 lead with under three minutes of the first half left to play.

The home team would strike late in the first half, Festus Shiasi ducking between a pool of bodies to dive over the white chalk, Sikutwa adding the extra twos to make it a three point game heading into the breather, scores now 15-12.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Oilers were first to hit from the break, as the forwards dominated the scrum allowing scrumhalf Samson Onsomu to snipe an unmarked blindside, fending off two defenders before touching down in the corner, Omela adding the twos to extend their lead to 22-12.

KCB would be next on the scoreboard, this time courtesy of substitute prop Erick Miheso who would force his way over the whitewash beneath the uprights for to make it 22-19, the visitors still with a thin lead.

A Sikutwa penalty would draw the game level, the home team now piling pressure on the pink defence sensing a win within touching distance.

It would be Oilers who would score next, Omela going over at the corner after Onsomu changed play to catch KCB short of numbers on the blindside. Omela’s attempt at adding the twos would sail wide to bring the scores to 27-22 with just about five minutes left on the clock.

KCB would continue asking questions of the Oilers defence, seeing more ball in the Red zone now more than what they had managed the whole game.

Continued asking would finally pay, Sikutwa walking over the chalk as Oilers who were defending vehemently fell short of men on the outside.

Sikutwa’s conversion proving the decider of the evening as KCB came out on top 29-27 at the fullt time whistle.
