The Zimbabwe Sables have unveiled their squad to face the United Arab Emirates at Dubai’s Sevens Stadium on Tuesday.

Head coach Piet Benade has named four debutants, with two set to start and two awaiting their first cap from the bench.

Bekker for Zimbabwe Sables

Jovan Bekker, from Western Province, will make his debut as the loosehead prop, partnering with Simba Mandiona at hooker and Sharks’ Munashe Mhere, who also starts in the front row for the first time.

The second row is anchored by David Makamba and Simba Siraha, while the back row features Dylan Utete, Godfrey Muzanargwo, and captain Tino Mavesere.

Hilton Mudariki retains his role as scrum-half and skipper, with Ian Prior returning at fly-half after missing the Rugby Africa Cup final.

In the midfield, Kudzai Mashawi and Brandon Mudzekenyedzi have been selected, with Edward Sigauke starting on the blind wing. Trevor Gurwe takes the open wing, and Tadius Hwata slots in at full-back.

On the bench, Bryan Chiang and Kyle Godwin are poised for debut appearances. Godwin, a former Super Rugby standout, is making his return to Zimbabwean rugby after 25 years. Born in Zimbabwe, Godwin relocated to Perth, Australia, at a young age and began his professional career with Associates in Western Australia. His Super Rugby journey began in 2012 with the Western Force, where he played 52 games, earned Rookie of the Year honors, was named Members’ Most Valuable Player, and received the Nathan Sharpe Medal.

Godwin’s career continued with two seasons at the Brumbies (24 games) before a return to the Force, followed by a stint in Ireland with Connacht Rugby in the Pro14. Internationally, he represented the Wallabies U20 and earned his senior cap for Australia against France in 2016.

The Sables will look to make a strong statement with this lineup as they prepare for the match against the UAE.
