Why Matekwa is impressed despite Zetech’s 4th place finish in Varsity 7s

Zetech Oaks head coach Ramsfeld Matekwa has expressed satisfaction to his side after the KUSF tournament that was hosted in Egerton University. 

Zetech suffered back to back losses in the main cup semi finals and the third place finals to hold the fourth position, the coach revealed that the named team was a newly integrated team from the main team. 

Speaking to Scrummage Africa, Zetech Oaks head coach expressed his satisfaction with the team’s overall performance in the tournament stating it’s just part of their build up strategy. 

“It was a good show from the boys, being a development team from the main team. We are looking forward to integrating a new pool of players from the just-concluded September 2024 intake.” he stated.

The coach has commended his technical team and is confident they will do better if they prepare well. 

“The technical bench is working tirelessly to ensure that the development team is up to the task ahead of them,” Matekwa said.

Zetech’s technical bench includes Strength and conditioning coach George Okello, team manager Nicholas Mutwiri, and sports coordinator Wycliffe Sirengo.

“The coaching staff is optimistic about the team’s future and is dedicated to nurturing new players to strengthen both the development and main teams,” he concluded. 

Zetech Oaks performance in Nakuru 

On the first day of the tournament, Zetech began its campaign with mixed results narrowly loosing to Multimedia University (MMU) 07-14 before finding ground against Meru University with a commanding 33-07 win. 

In their decider match,  they managed a solid 19-00 win over University of Eldoret (UOE) to secure their place in the quarterfinals.

Knockout Stages

In the quarterfinals, Zetech faced Moi University, where they emerged victorious with a narrow 07-05 win where they qualified for semis which was intense as they lost 00-15 against Kabarak University 

They dropped for 3rd place final where they faced Multimedia University and were narrowly humbled to a 07-00 loss.

Kabarak University was crowned the overall winner after running riot 31-00 over Machakos University. Kabarak will now represent Kenya in the East Africa competition.
