The Nyanza Region 7s rugby school games will head to the quarterfinal stage on Friday at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, after an exciting day of matches on Thursday.
Defending champions St. Mary’s Yala proved their dominance by winning their opening two matches.
Yala in Nyanza Region 7s
They defeated Cardinal Otunga 26-14, with Albert Otieno and Joseph Onyango each scoring two tries. Angelo Opingo added three conversions for a total of 20 points.
In their second match, Yala overwhelmed Gekano 34-5. Otieno and Onyango once again scored two tries each, while Henry Odhiambo added a single try. Opingo contributed three conversions and a penalty.
Kisii School, who will host the Nationals, also had a strong start. They secured a 22-7 victory over Rapogi, with Chrispine Jesse scoring two tries and Morgan Ochiel and Hughes Ombasa each adding one.

In their second match, Kisii School defeated Sawangongo 25-5, topping their pool. Jesse scored two more tries, while Jan Paulsen, Starford Nyambane, and Morgan Ochiel each scored one.
Nyanza Region 7s 1/4 for Otieno Oyoo
Otieno Oyoo caused an upset to top their pool by beating Maseno 12-10 in a repeat of the Kisumu County 7s final, which Maseno had won 12-10.
In the quarterfinals, St. Mary’s Yala will face Maseno School in a rematch of last year’s finals, where Yala edged Maseno.
Kisii School will go up against Agoro Sare, Anjengo will tackle Rapogi, and Otieno Oyoo will face Cardinal Otunga.
