Uganda beat South Africa to qualify for Africa Men’s 7s final against Madagascar

Uganda boosted their chances of featuring in the 2025 Challenger Series after beating South Africa A 12-0 to qualify for the Africa Men’s 7s first leg final set for Labourdonnais Sports Grounds, Mauritius.

The Cranes will now take on Madagascar, who staged a comeback to beat Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso led 19-5 at halftime but Madagascar ultimately triumphed 24-18.

Uganda lead

The first minutes of the Uganda-South Africa match were closely contested. Uganda missed a golden opportunity to score when Philip Wokorach intercepted the ball and raced clear.

He set up Adrian Kasito in a promising position, but Kasito’s decision to cut in for a try saw him tackled and lose possession.

Uganda responded quickly when South Africa lost the ball in their try box area, allowing Aaron Ofoywroth to score. The try was converted for a 7-0 lead. The Cranes extended their lead after a patient build-up, with Nobert Okeny crossing over for a try at the corner, making it 12-0.

In the Madagascar-Burkina Faso match, Burkina Faso initially led 12-0. Madagascar struck back in the fifth minute with a converted try. Burkina Faso landed a center-post try just before the break, extending their lead to 19-5.

Madagascar camped in Burkina Faso’s 22 and grabbed a converted try to bring the scores to 19-12. The Makis tied the scores at 19-19 after a center-post try and conversion. The match went to extra time, where Burkina Faso won a penalty, but their attempt at goal went off target.

Madagascar landed the winning try in extra time to reach the final.
