The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced the formation of an Independent Electoral Board, which will be responsible for overseeing the upcoming elections to be held during the Annual General Meeting on March 24th, 2023 in Nairobi.
The board will be chaired by Aggrey Chabeda, a well-known and experienced rugby administrator in Kenya.
Joining Chabeda on the board are four other members, representing various aspects of the rugby community in Kenya. Sadik Makii will represent Kenya Cup clubs, while Auka Gecheo will represent Championship clubs. Faith Basiye will represent Women’s rugby, and sports lawyer Sarah Ochwada will represent the KRU Board.
KRU Chairman Oduor Gangla expressed his confidence in the newly formed board, saying, “As a board, we are committed to ensuring we conduct the elections within the parameters that were given by the sports tribunal and adhering to the KRU constitution as well as the Sports Act.”
This announcement comes after a period of controversy and uncertainty within the KRU, including a dispute over the eligibility of some candidates to run for office. However, with the appointment of the Independent Electoral Board, the KRU is taking steps to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted fairly and transparently.
The role of the Independent Electoral Board will be to oversee the electoral process, including voter registration, candidate eligibility, and vote counting. Their appointment as an independent body outside of the KRU is intended to increase transparency and reduce the potential for conflicts of interest.
Overall, the formation of the Independent Electoral Board is a positive step towards ensuring that the upcoming KRU elections are conducted in a fair and transparent manner, and that the interests of all members of the rugby community in Kenya are represented.
