100% win record for Kakamega School on day one of Yala opens, set for semis

Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA 15s) title holders Kakamega School Rugby team registered a 100% win record on day one of the St Mary’s Yala Opens 15s  tournament matches played on Saturday.

The East African defending Champions topped their Pool and are through to the semis of the competition where they will face Vihiga High School. Koyonzo High School are set to play St Peter’s Mumias in the second semi-final.

The Amos Wamanga coached-side kicked off their campaign with a 13-0 win over Maseno School in the opener. Stanley Ochieng who was instrumental in their day one campaign drilled in a penalty and later scored a try which he also converted for a win.

In the second match, the Barbarians saw off Bushangala Secondary 31-0. Ochieng bagged a hattrick and added three conversions. Elvis Amwayi got a brace but his tries went unconverted.

Ochieng’s lone penalty saw his side defeat St Peters Mumias 3-0. The side will be keen to win another trophy this weekend, having kicked their preseason by winning Bradley tournament held in Kamusinga last weekend.

Kakamega are using the tournament to prepare for the KSSSA 15s matches where they will be eyeing the record ninth title.  The Barbarians have won eight titles in the secondary School games.

The KSSSA matches are expected to return this year after a two-year hiatus occassioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
